Old shabby smoke filled bingo halls are pretty much a thing of the past in the UK. Today bingo is fashionable among the young and new game variants have attracted a new bingo audience. In the UK and some US cities hipsters have transformed traditional bingo. The Underground Rebel Bingo Club is a prime example. Their mission statement reads “This is not bingo. It’s Rebel Bingo. It’s loud and emotional.” Tickets for the underground games go fast and Rebel Bingo games are usually sold out. The games were created by two intoxicated friends who found bingo supplies in a church basement.

Today Rebel Bingo games take place in just about every major city in the UK and the US. The success of Rebel Bingo mirrors the rise in bingo’s popularity. Internet bingo sites have contributed to the game’s popularity and some bingo websites clearly understand players desire to escape from the stresses of daily life. The recession has hit the UK hard and people are looking for just about any sort of cheap affordable entertainment. Bingo is one of the most affordable games on the internet. At most internet bingo sites cards can be purchased for as little as a penny and even the cheapest games will have a sizable cash prize.

Social networking sites like Facebook have contributed to the growth of internet bingo. There are several free bingo games on Facebook and players in the UK can compete for real cash prizes on Facebook. Mobile bingo has been responsible for the recent rapid growth of internet bingo. Now players can participate in games no matter where they happen to be when the mood strikes them. It is common to see people playing mobile games on trains and buses.  Many internet bingo operators have launched games based on popular television shows and the games have been well received.

Internet gambling is a big business. A recent article in ‘Money Week’ said that the “£2 billion market is showing no signs of slowing” and one report estimated a growth rate of “over 20% per year for the last decade.” Some older players object to the new games. The Rebel Bingo organization says that “The old school bingo community don’t like us. They think we are desecrating their game. We’re just trying to have fun.” In fact fun is the reason why most people play bingo. A study done years ago showed that a large majority of bingo players said they played for fun and entertainment and not for financial gain.
